CYNTHIA-REEVES is a contemporary art space which features artworks with strong conceptual foundations and technical prowess. Represented artists evince powerful mark-making and textural concerns, impeccable craftsmanship and, often, an innovative use of everyday materials. Much of the art reflects an ongoing inquiry into the use of natural media and its transformation into unexpected and extraordinary sculptural works or environments. The gallery director, Cynthia Reeves, maintains that art is intellectual and aesthetic and includes both visual and visceral experiences.
CYNTHIA-REEVES was founded in 2001, following the successful launch of the New England gallery, Spheris, in 1995. Both galleries have an intense focus on established as well as emerging artists working in diverse media.
CYNTHIA-REEVES presents eight exhibitions annually in our 6,000 sf gallery space located at 535 West 24th Street in Chelsea. In January of 2009, the gallery name shifted from Reeves Contemporary to CYNTHIA-REEVES, as a way of acknowledging the evolution of our program to include conceptually-driven, and formally rigorous, site-specific installation.
In 1999, Ms. Reeves founded Great River Arts, a non-profit teaching institute for the literary and visual arts in Bellows Falls, Vermont (www.greatriverarts.org). The organization works to build awareness of the arts in rural communities and to support arts and literacy curricula for school age students from first grade through high school in Vermont and New Hampshire.
Cynthia Reeves has been a contemporary art dealer for fifteen years, and owns two venues: CYNTHIA-REEVES in New York City and Spheris Gallery in Hanover, NH. She is the founder of Great River Arts, a non-profit institute for arts and literacy education in New England. She recently curated the acclaimed exhibition H20: Film on Water, partnering with Water for People, a non-profit that works to resolve water issues in communities around the world, a collaboration that continues her longtime involvement in conservation and environmental initiatives.
Sara P Mintz (Associate Director) came to CYNTHIA-REEVES in 2007, after graduating Magna Cum Laude with highest departmental honors from Skidmore College. She holds a BA in Art History. During her tenure in New York City she has worked as a freelance writer for American Contemporary Arts Magazine and Saint-Gaudens Natural Historic Site Museum and volunteered at Independent Curators International.
Marie Goble came to CYNTHIA-REEVES in October 2008 following her graduation from DePaul University with a double major in Art History and Chemistry. Before coming to CYNTHIA-REEVES Marie worked at the St. Louis Art Museum cataloging and researching their Russian icon collection. She was also an art conservation/restoration intern in Bagno a Ripoli, Italy where she helped to restore the 15th century frescoes at the Antico Spedale del Bigallo.
