Installed on deCordova’s main lawn, Jaehyo Lee’s 0121-1110=113035 (Lotus) is a 20-foot pillar comprised of chestnut logs that have been burned, hand-carved, and assembled into a massive inverted cone. The sculpture bursts upwards like a tornado; its verticality resonates with the towering nearby trees on deCordova’s grounds. The surface of Lotus is highly polished to emphasize the natural beauty and variation of the bark and wood grain.

CYNTHIA-REEVES is pleased to announce that Lotus, JaeHyo Lee’s seminal wooden pillar, is featured in Influx 2015, the inaugural outdoor public art exhibition of the Avenue Concept. The Avenue Concept promotes public art and artists in Providence, Rhode Island. Cited for its meticulous craftmanship, Lotus is shaped, and hand carved, stretching twenty feet high on a steel armature. Lee originally debuted the sculpture in New York City’s Union Square Park in the spring of 2013, a collaboration with the NYC Parks and the Union Square Association, and CYNTHIA-REEVES Projects, before it traveled to Sarasota, Florida for annual season of Sculpture Exhibition in 2014.

CYNTHIA-REEVES is pleased to announce an exhibition of noted Korean artist, JaeHyo Lee. Working with wood and metal, JaeHyo Lee produces immaculately formed, intricate sculptures that reveal a mastery of his materials and a winking, sophisticated wit. Lee eschews traditional distinctions between the fine and applied arts and makes both functional and functionless works, presenting benches, stools, and tables alongside abstract, biomorphic forms. Burnt-black wood often serves as the sculptural ground into which Lee embeds discs of fresh wood or bent steel bolts and nails.
