LOTUS

JAEHYO LEE

deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum
Lincoln, MA

Installed on deCordova’s main lawn, Jaehyo Lee’s 0121-1110=113035 (Lotus) is a 20-foot pillar comprised of chestnut logs that have been burned, hand-carved, and assembled into a massive inverted cone. The sculpture bursts upwards like a tornado; its verticality resonates with the towering nearby trees on deCordova’s grounds. The surface of Lotus is highly polished to emphasize the natural beauty and variation of the bark and wood grain.

JAEHYO LEE

June 11 – July 24, 2016
1315 MASS MoCA Way, North Adams MA

CYNTHIA-REEVES is pleased to announce an exhibition of noted Korean artist, JaeHyo Lee. Working with wood and metal, JaeHyo Lee produces immaculately formed, intricate sculptures that reveal a mastery of his materials and a winking, sophisticated wit. Lee eschews traditional distinctions between the fine and applied arts and makes both functional and functionless works, presenting benches, stools, and tables alongside abstract, biomorphic forms. Burnt-black wood often serves as the sculptural ground into which Lee embeds discs of fresh wood or bent steel bolts and nails.

CRAFTED: OBJECTS IN FLUX

JAEHYO LEE

August 25, 2015 – January 10, 2016
MFA Boston, Henry and Lois Foster Gallery

Crafted explores this moment of “flux” in the field, focusing on contemporary craft-based artists who bridge cutting-edge concepts and traditional skills as they embrace and explore the increasingly blurred boundaries between art, craft, and design. Featuring a selection of works from across the landscape of contemporary craft, the exhibition includes more than 30 emerging and established international artists. Looking to a broad range of materials and practices, the exhibition explores the connections between craft and performance; the opportunities provided by new technologies and materials; and the power of rethinking craft’s interactions with architecture and space.

WALKING WITH NATURE

JAEHYO LEE

May 5 – July 3, 2016
Seongnam Art Center, South Korea

As a master of manipulation, Lee turns discarded pieces of wood into attention-grabbing pieces of art that are both elegant and functional. The true joy of the art of the artist is the unassuming manner in which he shares his profound and wide philosophical understanding of life in novel and at times prosaic forms, employing in the process, a rich array of materials to realize objects of great beauty. Feast your eyes with Lee’s astonishing artworks.
