Urbanscape

As cities and real estate developers envision new urbanscapes – cities within cities – functional greenspaces become ever more essential to thoughtful urban planning.  Linking live/work, retail and recreational architecture, greenways and walkways become essential design elements in a successful urban plan. We are pleased to have been asked to partner with respected developers and architects to design these essential spaces.

Project A: Cambridge Crossing:  Patrick Marold

Working with DIVCO West on their new development, Cambridge Crossing, we were asked to address a difficult pedestrian transition from an adjacent academic campus, under a wide highway overpass, and onto the Cambridge Crossing green space. The artist Patrick Marold developed an innovative installation using small wind turbines on stems of copper clad shafts.  LED lighting on each stem uses energy generated from the wind turbines, creating a beautifully lit nighttime path, with a subtle reassuring hum of the wind turbines as they spin.  Our collaborators on the project are Michael Van Valkenburg and Associates.

Project B: Boston Proposal: “City within a City”

We were approached by a real estate development firm to assist them in envisioning an entire live / work / recreational / academic ‘city within a city’. For this proposal, we envisioned a way of linking the entire campus through the lens of innovative artworks, employing sculptural works, way-finding, architectural facades, and generative, data-driven displays.
