PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVES

Luis Gonzalez Palma, Renaissance Press, and Daniel Julian Norton

March 1, 2019
1315 MASS MoCA Way, North Adams, MA

The exhibition features early images of people from Palma’s home country of Guatemala, images of Renaissance Press showcasing turn-of-the-20th-century photographic techniques, and early work by Daniel Julian Norton, a performance artist based in the Ohio. The stark beauty of each image – both figural and of the land – contributes to this very rich visual exchange among the three voices included in this exhibition.

GEORGE SHERWOOD

WIND, WAVES, & LIGHT

April 28 – November 3, 2018
Reimans Gardens, Iowa State University, Ames, IA

Wind, Waves and Light will feature 13 kinetic sculptures designed to explore space, time, and the dynamic relationship of objects in motion. The choreography of each piece is governed by a set of basic movements, facilitated by an arrangement of aerodynamic surfaces connected by rotational points. The sculptures are made of stainless steel, and the reflective qualities integrate each sculpture into its environment. Wind speed and direction, shades of light, time of day, precipitation, and seasonal color transform the qualities of light and movement of the sculptures.

Willard Boepple

BUILT AND PRINTED

May 19 – June 23, 2018
1315 MASS MoCA Way, North Adams, MA

An exhibition of new work by Willard Boepple. The artist’s reception from 5 – 7 p.m. is free and open to the public. The exhibition features Boepple’s impeccable monoprints, and his three-dimensional forms, both large and small scale. The works are on view through June 23rd.

In this exhibition, his monoprints are accompanied by larger scale floor-based sculptures and by a series of 3D printed small sculptures, a new area of exploration. To make his sculptures, he rarely works from drawings or maquettes, but draws the sculptures after they are made, as if to figure out what he has done. It was this drawing practice that led to the inquiry into 3D printing.
